Dr. Justin B. Stein is the chair of the Asian Studies Program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where he also teaches in the Department of Language and Cultures.

He is a historian of Japanese religion and spirituality who has written extensively about Reiki, including his 2023 book, Alternate Currents: Reiki’s Circulation in the Twentieth-Century North Pacific. He also edited the recent English-language translation of the 1933 book by Tomita Kaiji, Reiki and the Benevolent Art of Healing: Tomita-style Hands-on Therapyand is co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Religion, Medicine, and Health, and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals including Asian Medicine, Japanese ReligionsJournal of Global Buddhism, and Modern Asian Studies.
